Saddening new details have come out amid Mel B‘s divorce from her allegedly abusive ex Stephen Belafonte.
As we’ve previously reported, the Spice Girls alum was granted a restraining order against the film producer, claiming he has been physically and emotionally abusive towards her.
It’s now being revealed that in the days leading up to her filing for divorce, Stephen tried to keep the America’s Got Talent judge from visiting her dying father, Martin. According to the court papers, he attempted to hide her passport and said:
"If he’s going to die, he’s going to die. Suck it up."
Fortunately, Mel did make it to the UK to be by her dad’s side when he passed. And reportedly, the controlling experience involving her husband is what led to her to file the papers.
But this isn’t the first time the momma-of-three has thought about going to see divorce lawyers.
A source told the DailyMail that Simon Cowell tried to step in back in 2014 when he realized something was wrong:
"Although no one was sure what was going on, Simon and the team at Syco really became concerned at the X Factor finale in 2014. In the days afterwards, following her release from hospital, they were tried to help her leave Belafonte. They arranged for her to stay in a hotel, visited her there and tried to help her get a handle on her finances – it seemed as if he controlled virtually everything financially."
In case you don’t remember, fans became worried when Mel showed up to a taping of the X Factor with bruises and scratches on her skin.
Well, the insider continued:
"She never divulged to anyone that he was beating her up, but had told them she wanted to leave him and and they introduced her to divorce lawyers to help her to go through with it. Unfortunately, he had already then gone back to the US with one of the children – and returned to LA because she feared he would stop her ever seeing her children."
We have a feeling we’re going to hear a lot more about their relationship in the coming days.
In the meantime, we’re thinking of you, Mel!
