Basketball news 2021: Who is Olivier Rioux, height, age, shoe size

November 29, 2021 by Staff Reporter

A 15-year-old has set social media alight after footage emerged of the 7-foot phenom strutting his stuff on the basketball court and making it look easy.

Basketball is widely considered a sport for the tall folks among us, and a Canadian teenager has only served to reinforce that notion.

15-year-old Olivier Rioux stands at a staggering 7-foot, five-inches tall and holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest teenager in the world.

Rioux, who plays as a centre for the IMG Academy, looks to be carving out a path for himself on the hardwood as he continues to evolve.

A viral Instagram video of the Canadian shows the almost unfair advantages of being so tall at a young age has over his competitors.

In the clip, Rioux barely needs to lift off of his tippy-toes to perform a slam dunk and requires little effort to outmuscle his opponents when claiming a rebound.

Fans on social media couldn’t believe what they were seeing before their eyes, with a number of them noting how Rioux is all but destined for an NBA career while others pointed out how small the teenager made the ball look.

One user commented: “Moving good for someone 7ft5. NBA bound!”

Another wrote: “The ball look tiny.”

One user posted: “He makes the ball look like a damn baseball.”

A punter said: “He’s actually big too bro has a free pass to the NBA if he practices.”

As the old saying goes, the apple certainly doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to his family, either.

The Rioux clan boast some serious height: his father and brother are both over 6-foot, eight-inches tall and his mother stands at 6-foot, one-inch tall.

Surprisingly, doctors never predicted Rioux to grow to a world-record height.

According to the Guinness World Records, Rioux was born weighing 3.4kg before growing to 7.26kg in his first month.

In fifth grade, the Canadian stood at 5-feet, two-inches tall. Doctors believed Rioux would peak at 6-feet, five-inches tall but he completely exceeded expectations.

With the family all standing at crazy heights, the Rioux family home was remodelled to accommodate for their needs, meaning ceilings and tabletops are better suited for them.

No doubt the sporting world will keep tabs on Rioux as he grows in age and — worryingly for his future opponents — height.
