ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia men’s golf team will continue the 2022 portion of its schedule next week in the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, Nev.
Lineup: Senior Trent Phillips; juniors Nicolas Cassidy and Ben van Wyk; and freshmen Buck Brumlow and Maxwell Ford.
Field: Georgia, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, Northwestern, San Diego, SMU, Southern California, TCU, UCLA, UNLV.
Course: Southern Highlands Golf Club (par 72, 7,510 yards).
Schedule and format: Georgia and the other squads will have 18 holes of stroke play Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Georgia will be paired with Pepperdine and Illinois for the first round, with tee times set between 1:40 and 2:20 p.m. EST.
Rankings: No. 7 Bushnell Golfweek Coaches, No. 9 Golfstat, No. 9 Golfweek/Sagarin.
Last Time: The Bulldogs came in second in the Puerto Rico Classic. Georgia set school records for lowest tournament (53-under 811) and round (23-under 265). Ford placed second, followed by Phillips in fourth, van Wyk in 16th, Brumlow in 21st, and Cassidy in 31st.
Coach Chris Haack Says: “Puerto Rico was a big boost for all of us, so hopefully we can carry some of that momentum into Las Vegas. But our guys are well aware that this week is very different from last week, especially the weather and the course. That’s what we all enjoy about golf, making those adjustments tournament to tournament. Our guys are playing with a great deal of confidence, so we’ll just add them up at the end and see what’s what. We’re looking forward to this opportunity.”
News & Notes: The Southern Highlands Collegiate individual champion will receive an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will take place Oct. 6-9, 2022, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. … Ford has twice been named SEC Freshman of the Week this spring. … Phillips was named to the 30-man watch list for the Hogan Award. … Cassidy is serving this year on Georgia’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, while Connor Creasy and Will Kahlstorf are on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. … van Wyk’s last name is pronounced fun-vake. …… Ford represented the Bulldogs in the Patriot All-America, wherein the players carry a bag that includes the name and branch of service of a fallen or severely wounded soldier. … Phillips is rated No. 6 by Golfweek/Sagarin, No. 8 in the Velocity Global Ranking, and No. 12 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. … Phillips has appeared in 34 of 34 collegiate tournaments.
On Deck: After the Southern Highlands Collegiate, the Bulldogs will appear March 20-22 in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
