Bulldogs To Open 2022 In Southwestern Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia men’s golf team will open the 2022 portion of its schedule this week in the Southwestern Invitational Presented By Topgolf in Westlake Village, Calif.

Lineup: Senior Trent Phillips; juniors Connor Creasy and Ben van Wyk; and freshmen Buck Brumlow and Maxwell Ford. Junior Nicolas Cassidy will compete as an individual.

Field: Georgia, Arizona State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Jose State, SMU, Texas, UCLA, Southern Cal, UNLV, Wake Forest, and Washington.

Schedule and format: Georgia and the other squads will play 18 holes of stroke play Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

TV coverage: The Golf Channel will air College Central from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by live coverage of the Southwestern Invitational from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Rankings: No. 13 Golfstat, No. 16 Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, No. 16 Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings

Course: North Ranch Country Club (par 72, 6,992 yards).

Live Results: Golfstat will provide live scoring, pairings, and tee times.

Last Time: The Bulldogs came in second in the inaugural Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf in Wilmington, N.C., in November. Phillips earned medalist honors for the third time in his career and Brumlow set his career-best finish of fifth.

Coach Chris Haack Says: “We’re excited to be getting back to work with a rare January tournament. The quicker start reignited our focus coming out of the break, and the guys have really put in the work. Our qualifying rounds were extremely competitive. I am happy with the way they battled for these spots. We’re looking forward to another opportunity to compete.”

News & Notes: In the fall, Phillips posted a win in The Williams Cup and a runner-up finish in The Carmel Cup. He enters 2022 rated No. 3 by Golfweek/Sagarin and No. 12 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and the Velocity Global Ranking. … With his win in The Williams Cup, he received an exemption to compete in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C., June 2-5, 2022. … Phillips is 32-of-32 in collegiate tournaments. … Cassidy is serving this year on Georgia’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, while Creasy and senior Will Kalhstorf are on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. … van Wyk’s last name is pronounced fun-vake. … Senior Eli Scott recently secured a spot in the 2022 Jones Cup Invitational. … Ford represented the Bulldogs in the Patriot All-America, wherein the players carry a bag that includes the name and branch of service of a fallen or severely wounded soldier.

On Deck: After the Southwestern Invitational, the Bulldogs will compete Feb. 13-15 in the Puerto Rico Classic.
