A Michelin Guide pub and restaurant in Lancashire has told a disgruntled customer they ‘wish she’d gone to McDonald’s instead’ after the punter described the dining experience as ‘not the best’.
The White Bull in Oswaldtwistle is the number one ranked restaurant in the East Lancashire town on Tripadvisor, while also the 23rd best ranked in the whole of Lancashire. It boasts a Travellers Choice 2023 Award with the review platform, which means it is among the top 10% of attractions in the world that are listed on Tripadvisor.
The restaurant is more of a traditional pub by nature, with it making the 2023 Michelin Guide, who said about it: “This neighbourhood pub’s menus cover everything from bar nibbles to pub classics; they offer lunch, afternoon tea and dinner – and even serve breakfast on Sundays. The endearing team take care in everything they do, portions are generous, and dishes not only look good but taste good too. The traditional Lancashire cheese, onion and ale pie is a must-try.”
But one review in the past month has seen one diner wish they’d done to fast food chain McDonald’s instead of the highly rated venue near Accrington. Reviewer Sheila B posted her 2/5 review headlined: “Not the best experience at the White Bull. Wish we’d gone to McDonalds.”
Sheila, who is allergic to shellfish, said she was told she couldn’t have chips due to prawns being fried in the same pan as the potatoes. She also hit out at the service.
In the review, she wrote: “We were 10 minutes late arriving because of traffic holdups and oh boy were we punished for it. We got our drinks then we waited. We ordered. I am shellfish allergic and was told I couldn’t have chips because prawns were fried in the same pan as the chips. I settled for burger with mashed potato. The mash was obviously a scooped out baked potato.
“Only two staff waiting at tables and they were both very slow. So disappointed as this was supposedly to be a treat from my son and his partner. Never again.”
Sheila, from nearby Bacup, rated the value as 1/5; service 1/5; atmosphere 1/5; and food 3/5.
Responding, The White Bull simply stated: “Hi Sheila, I wish you had gone to McDonald’s also. Best regards.”
The review from Sheila is certainly an outlier on Tripadvisor, with the venue boasting a five star rating. Last week, reviewer Bea W said: “The most delicious pub or restaurant Roast Beef Sunday lunch we’ve eaten in a long time. Often the beef is nice but the vegetables not, or the other way round but every mouthful was delicious, from the generous portion of tender beef to the tasty and plentiful vegetable, and this, together with a warm welcome , lovely atmosphere and top service means we will be back soon. We were too full for pudding but those being served to other tables looked delicious and like the main courses had that definite fine dining flair. All this in a local Oswaldtwistle pub. Perfect!”
Ellmaika added: “Been meaning to visit for ages, so we made the effort for my son’s birthday. Welcoming from start to finish. The most welcoming staff who all seem happy in their work; rare these days. As we were sat close to a speaker we were even asked if we would like it turned down. Couldn’t fault the food, service or price. I now must go back to experience the Sunday roasts!”
The White Bull can be found in New Lane, Oswaldtwistle, near Accrington. It opens midday to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, as well as 8am to 7pm on Sundays.
