BRIGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — W.A.T.C.H— World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc. — revealed its annual list of the most dangerous toys on the market.
The non-profit child safety organization held a press conference Monday morning at the Franciscan Children’s in the Chamberlain Conference Room.
In the report, they said, “Children’s injuries typically double over the summer months and W.A.T.C.H. wants to help prevent injuries by providing education about potential harm related to summer recreation.”
W.A.T.C.H. President Joan Siff and Director James Swartz highlighted tips and advice for preventing summer-specific injuries.
Following COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Siff stated at the press conference that there has been a surge in toy and bike related injuries among adolescents.
“There was an estimated 39% increase in injuries associated to bikes and accessories than the previous year,” Siff said. “This is a huge jump.”
Along with workout equipment, Siff and Swartz warned people about the rise of social media trends and how they impact kid’s safety.
They cautioned, “The increase in social media use by kids during COVID-19 and the expected increase in social media use by children with more free time on their hands during the summer are compelling reasons to stay informed about online trends associated with injuries.”
